Eight of his 16 siblings died young, and his first wife, Jennie Stevens, suffered a terminal illness, which was miraculously healed through the ministry of John Alexander Dowie in 1899. This experience sparked Lake’s interest in divine healing.
Early Ministry and Missionary Work
Lake’s ministry began in the early 1900s, and he eventually moved to South Africa in 1908, where he co-founded the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa with Thomas Hezmalhalch. During his five-year missionary work in Africa, Lake saw over one million converts, planted hundreds of churches, and raised up over 1,000 local ministers.
The Healing Rooms
Upon returning to the United States, Lake established “The Healing Rooms” in Spokane, Washington, in 1915. This ministry reported over 100,000 medically confirmed healings within five years, earning Spokane the title of “America’s healthiest city” in 1918. Lake’s approach emphasized faith, Scripture, and the believer’s access to the Holy Spirit’s power.
Legacy and Impact
Lake’s ministry spanned continents, and his teachings on divine healing and the believer’s authority in Christ have shaped Pentecostal and charismatic theology. He continued to travel and preach until his death on September 16, 1935.
