Text: 2 Chronicles 20:5-21
Trusting God When the Odds Are Against You
1. The Situation: Fear is Natural, But Not Final
Jehoshaphat stood in the courts of Jerusalem with a problem no army could solve. Three nations: Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir had joined forces to attack Judah. The report came in: “A great multitude is coming against you from Edom” 2 Chr 20:2.
Jehoshaphat’s first reaction was fear. 2 Chr 20:3 says “he was afraid”. That’s honest. Even kings tremble. Even believers feel fear when the battle is bigger than their strength. Jesus Himself prayed “let this cup pass from me” Matthew 26:39. Fear is human.
But notice what he did next: “he set his face to seek the Lord” 2 Chr 20:3. He didn’t run. He didn’t panic. He prayed. Psalm 46:1 reminds us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”.
2. The Posture: Pray Before You Panic
In verses 5-12, Jehoshaphat prays publicly. He starts by remembering God’s character: “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations” 2 Chr 20:6.
He didn’t start with his problem. He started with God’s power. That’s worship. Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make straight your paths”.
Then he confesses weakness: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” 2 Chr 20:12. That is faith. It’s not pretending to be strong. It’s admitting dependence. When you don’t know the way forward, fix your eyes on the One who does. Hebrews 12:2: “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith”.
3. The Promise: The Battle Belongs to God
Before Judah could lift a sword, God spoke through Jahaziel the prophet: “Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s” 2 Chr 20:15.
Be not afraid = don’t let fear paralyze you.
Nor dismayed = don’t let discouragement break you.
Isaiah 41:10 echoes the same word: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you”.
God’s strategy was unusual: “You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord” 2 Chr 20:17. Sometimes God’s victory comes not through your striving, but through your standing. Exodus 14:14: “The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent”.
4. The Prescription: Worship Your Way to Victory
Verse 21 is shocking. Jehoshaphat puts singers and worshippers at the front of the army. They went into battle singing: “Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever”.
Praise before the breakthrough. Worship before the evidence. That’s faith in action. Paul and Silas did the same in prison: they sang hymns at midnight, and the prison doors opened Acts 16:25-26.
When you worship in the middle of the storm, you’re declaring that God is bigger than the storm. Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth”.
5. The Payoff: Victory Without Casualties
By the time Judah arrived, the enemy armies had turned on each other 2 Chr 20:22-23. Judah didn’t lose a man. They collected spoil for three days 2 Chr 20:25.
God turned their battle into a blessing. Romans 8:37: “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us”.
What’s your “Moab, Ammon, and Seir”? A medical report? A financial crisis? A broken relationship? A child you can’t control?
God is still saying to you today: “Be not afraid nor dismayed”. The battle you’re facing may be bigger than you, but it’s not bigger than your God.
So do three things like Jehoshaphat:
1. Pray: Take it to God before you take it to social media. Philippians 4:6-7
2. Position: Stand firm. Don’t make rash decisions out of fear. Isaiah 30:15
3. Praise: Thank God in advance. Faith calls things that are not as though they were Romans 4:17
The enemy wants you afraid because fear makes you forget. But God wants you faithful because faith remembers: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
Lord, when fear rises, help me to lift my eyes. When I’m confused, let my eyes stay on You. Teach me to worship before the victory, because You are worthy regardless of the outcome. Amen.
